The Asiatic Lions of India are now confined to the Gir National Park, a tiny pocket in the Saurashtrian Peninsula in Western India
Just over two hundred of these beautiful beasts survive in the 300 sq. km. forest reserve set apart due to the initial efforts of the Royal Family of Junagarh.
Apart from the Asiatic Lions, Gir National Park also has a large population of Leopards, Wild Boar, Nilgai, Chital, Sambar, Chinkara and Chousingha.
North of Gir National Park is the Little Rann of Kutch, the last bastion of the Khur or the Asiatic Wild Ass. Usually found in herds of about 30, the Wild Ass is capable of surviving on very dry arid conditions and withstanding very high temperatures.
The Rann of Kutch is also host to Greater Flamingoes, Lower Flamingoes, Red-Wattled Lapwing, Indian Courser, Sarus Cranes, Common Crane, White Stork, the Asian Open Bill and many more species of Birds.
